Renovation bonus crisis in Brussels: A budget in jeopardy for 2024

In Brussels, the renovation grants budget, managed by Bruxelles Environnement and Urban, is in trouble for 2024. With an initial budget of 48 million euros, Bruxelles Environnement can no longer keep up with demand, leaving more than 12,000 applications awaiting payment. Since August 16, it has been impossible to submit new premium applications.

Renovation bonus crisis in Brussels, a challenge for the government

Renovation bonus crisis in Brussels grants have become increasingly popular in recent years, with the budget doubling between 2022 and 2024. Despite a significant increase, the amount allocated for this year is already insufficient. Brussels-based trainer David Leisterh has stated that at least a further 38 million euros would be needed to settle outstanding premiums. The halt in new applications leaves the future government team with the task of finding solutions to balance this budget.

Urban and Bruxelles environnement under pressure

Urban, in charge of major renovation projects, is facing a deficit of 17.8 million euros, while Bruxelles Environnement, which handles “Energy” premiums (insulation, heating), is also short of funds. Both institutions are struggling to meet expectations, with demand far exceeding forecasts.

The budgetary challenge facing Brussels in 2024 highlights the need to review the financing of renovation subsidies to avoid a similar crisis in the future.
